Glaucoma Diagnosis and Treatment
In glaucoma, the optic nerve tissue in the back of the eye is gradually destroyed, usually because the pressure inside the eye is too high. The greatest danger of glaucoma is that the disease is painless and without obvious symptoms until significant damage has occurred. Our doctors always monitor for glaucoma during your comprehensive eye examination, including checking the intraocular pressure, screening for peripheral vision defects and analyzing the appearance of the optic nerve. If you are diagnosed with glaucoma, we typically prescribe medications to lower the eye pressure. Most forms of glaucoma are successfully treated with eye drops, but laser treatments and eye surgery offer alternative ways to treat more advanced glaucoma.
We now have an additional tool to help us detect and monitor glaucoma, the Zeiss GDx nerve fiber layer analyzer. This instrument quickly and comfortably uses a laser to scan and measure the thickness of the nerve fiber layer inside your eye. This helps us to detect nerve damage from glaucoma before vision loss occurs.
Diabetic Eye Exams
Diabetic patients should have a comprehensive eye examination each year. During this examination, our doctors will check your eyes for signs of diabetic retinopathy, or damage to the tiny blood vessels of the retina. We will also check for cataracts, glaucoma, and vision changes which may be related to diabetes. We will communicate the results of the examination with your primary care physician or endocrinologist, to ensure that they have all the information necessary to keep your diabetes under good control. If we discover advancing diabetic retinopathy that can be treated or needs further evaluation, we will refer you for consultation to a board certified retinal specialist.
Cataract Care
The natural lens in the eye gradually becomes less clear as we get older. When opacities develop in the lens and the lens gets too hazy, vision will be impaired. Our doctors can diagnose and manage cataracts. When the cataract affects the vision to the extent that you cannot read or see distant objects comfortably, we may recommend cataract surgery. Our office co-manages with cataract specialists that are proven experts in cataract surgery. Cataract surgery can provide you with a bright new outlook on life.
Laser Vision Correction
Laser vision correction procedures such as LASIK have become a popular alternative to glasses and contact lenses. If you are interested in laser vision correction, we will be happy to help you determine if it is right for you. We will discuss your options and guide you in choosing the surgeon, procedure and laser which are most appropriate for you. We provide pre-operative and post-operative care for the best possible results.
